We also offered ice water and fruit juice boxes for the little ones. Refreshing lemonade was the perfect beverage to accompany the adorable grey, yellow and white-striped paper straws. The main food table was home to lots of tasty and healthy food items including chicken, steak and shrimp skewers, a fresh mediterranean salad with kalamata olives, avocado and feta, mini caprese skewers with a balsamic reduction drizzle, hummus and cucumber cupcakes, pita chips and roasted red bell pepper hummus, fresh fruit skewers, and a delicious couscous tabbouleh. I created a photo banner of baby J’s first 12 months with baby clothespins and twine to hang from a small tree. Pine cones and moss balls adorned the length of the table, leaving plenty of room for the guests to eat and socialize. I kept the table decor simple, elegant and earthy with baby’s breath and billy balls in mason jars painted gold. I think it was an absolute hit! Handmade felt bunting and paper lanterns hung from tree to tree! The tables were covered in white linens with a burlap runner. With the abundant help of my amazing family and a couple of my best girlfriends, the party went off without a hitch! Here are a few photos of the details of the party. I began doing as much handmade decor as possible, to save a little money and to make it even more special for J. I scoured the web and Pinterest for planning and decor, since I’ve never thrown a party like this before. Months ago, I decided on a “Where the Wild Things Are” theme, since that was my husband’s favorite book as a child. They've got some really excellent actors and actresses, including James Gandolfini, Catherine Keener, Forest Whitaker, and Catherine O'Hara. For little J’s first birthday, I wanted to have a big party with all of our friends and family. I was glad to find that they didn't go with a known child actor to play Max, though now that I think about it, I'm not even really sure why I'm glad-maybe because most known child actors are too old for the role, anyway. It sounds like they've gone to enormous effort to be true to the source material, and to find the right actors for the right parts.

Jonze is an excellent director, but Eggers has no experience writing screenplays, and besides, I often find his writing a bit too self-involved.Ĭonsequently, I was really glad to read a new interview with Jonze by Moriarty on Ain't It Cool News. The last I'd heard about it was that Spike Jonze was going to direct it, which worked in its favor, and that Dave Eggers was going to collaborate with Jonze on the screenplay, which could've gone either way, to my mind.

My feelings were not dissuaded by the fact that the movie was first announced several years ago, and was originally supposed to come out last month, but got delayed and is now scheduled for next October. It's one of my, my wife's, and my kids' favorite books, so I figured the chances were low that the movie was going to live up to our standards. So I hadn't had a lot of hope for the movie version of the classic kids' book Where the Wild Things Are, by Maurice Sendak. I'm thinking particularly of the versions of How the Grinch Stole Christmas and The Cat in the Hat, both of which I found utterly unwatchable (and, honestly, those are the only ones that leap to mind at the moment). Live-action movie versions of kids' picture books are rarely very good.
